How missing data rate works
Missing data rate is the percentage of expected values in a dataset that are absent — a basic data-quality check that should come before any deeper analysis, since a high missing rate can bias results if not handled properly.
Enter the number of missing values and the total number of expected values (rows, cells, or responses, depending on what you're measuring). The calculator returns the missing data rate as a percentage.
A meaningfully high missing rate is a signal to investigate the cause (a survey question people skipped, a data-collection gap, a merge error) before deciding how to handle it — dropping, imputing, or flagging incomplete records.
The formula
Missing data rate = Missing values ÷ Total expected values × 100
Divide the count of missing values by the total number of values you expected to have, then multiply by 100.
Worked example
30 missing values out of 1,000 expected
30 ÷ 1,000 × 100 = 3% missing data rate.
Frequently asked questions
What's an acceptable missing data rate?
It depends on the analysis and field — some fields tolerate up to 5-10% with appropriate handling, while others require much stricter completeness. There's no universal threshold.
Should I calculate this per field or for the whole dataset?
Both are useful — an overall rate gives a quick health check, while per-field rates show which specific questions or measurements have the most gaps.
Does this tell me how to handle missing data?
No — this calculator only measures the rate. How to handle it (deletion, imputation, flagging) depends on why the data is missing and what your analysis requires.
