Queue Abandonment Rate Calculator
Find what percentage of callers hung up before being served.
How queue abandonment rate works
Queue abandonment rate is the percentage of callers (or chats) who disconnected while waiting, before being served — a key signal of wait-time pain that on-time service-level metrics alone can miss.
Enter the number of abandoned contacts and the total number of contacts offered to the queue. The calculator returns the abandonment rate.
Abandonment tends to rise sharply once wait times cross a threshold your customers find acceptable — pair this metric with average speed of answer (see the Erlang C Staffing Calculator) to diagnose root causes.
The formula
Abandonment rate = Abandoned contacts ÷ Offered contacts × 100
Divide the number of abandoned contacts by the total number of contacts offered to the queue, then multiply by 100.
Worked example
24 abandoned calls out of 800 offered
24 ÷ 800 × 100 = 3% abandonment rate.
Frequently asked questions
What's a typical abandonment rate target?
Many contact centers target under 5%, but the right threshold depends on your industry and customer expectations — trend over time matters more than a single benchmark.
How is this related to service level?
Service level measures speed for calls that ARE answered. Abandonment measures callers who left before being answered at all — both matter for a complete picture of queue performance.
Does staffing more agents always reduce abandonment?
Generally yes, since shorter queues give fewer callers time to abandon — the Erlang C Staffing Calculator can help estimate how many agents are needed for a target wait time.
