How employee turnover rate works

Employee turnover rate is the standard HR metric for how much of your workforce left over a period — a recurring KPI reported to leadership and benchmarked against industry norms.

Enter the number of separations (voluntary and involuntary, per your definition) and the average headcount for the period. The calculator returns the turnover rate as a percentage.

Average headcount smooths out hiring and separation timing within the period — commonly calculated as (starting headcount + ending headcount) ÷ 2, though some organizations use a more granular average.

The formula

Turnover rate = Separations ÷ Average headcount × 100

Divide the number of separations during the period by the average headcount for that same period, then multiply by 100.

Worked example

12 separations, 200 average headcount

12 ÷ 200 × 100 = 6% turnover rate.

Frequently asked questions

Should this include both voluntary and involuntary departures?

Standard overall turnover rate includes both, but many organizations also track voluntary-only turnover separately since it often signals different underlying issues than involuntary turnover.

How is this different from Panel Attrition Rate?

The formula is the same ratio, but the population is different — an organization's workforce here, versus a research panel's respondents there. Keep the two metrics and their context separate.

What annualization period should I use?

Report the same period consistently (monthly, quarterly, annual) so trends are comparable — an unannualized monthly rate will look artificially low next to an annual rate.
