Focus Time / Pomodoro Budget Calculator

Find how many work/break cycles fit in your available time.

How the focus time budget works

This calculator splits a block of available time into work/break cycles (the Pomodoro Technique's classic pattern, or any custom interval you choose), so you can see exactly how many full cycles fit and how much total focus time you'll get.

Enter your available minutes, your work interval length, and your break interval length. The calculator returns the number of full cycles, total focus minutes, and total break minutes.

Any leftover time that doesn't fill a full cycle is added as partial focus time (up to one more work interval), so the total accounts for the whole block you have available.

The formula

Full cycles = floor(Available minutes ÷ (Work + Break)). Leftover added as partial focus time.

Divide available time by the length of one work-plus-break cycle to get full cycles. Any remaining time under one more cycle is credited toward focus time, up to the work interval length.

Worked example

120 minutes available, 25-minute work intervals, 5-minute breaks

Cycle length = 30 minutes. 120 ÷ 30 = 4 full cycles exactly: 100 minutes of focus time and 20 minutes of breaks.

Frequently asked questions

What is the classic Pomodoro interval?

25 minutes of focused work followed by a 5-minute break, with a longer break after every four cycles — this calculator's defaults match that convention, but any interval length works.

What happens to leftover time?

If it's less than one full work interval, it's credited as partial focus time (capped at the work interval length) rather than wasted or ignored.

Should I use longer intervals for deep work?

Many people use longer intervals (45-90 minutes) for deep, uninterrupted work and shorter intervals for more fragmented tasks — there's no single right answer, so experiment with what sustains your focus.
