How the work hours calculator works

This calculator finds actual paid hours worked from a clock-in time, a clock-out time, and any unpaid break time — the standard timesheet calculation.

Enter the clock-in and clock-out times and any unpaid break minutes. The calculator returns the total elapsed time and the paid time after subtracting the break.

For a shift that crosses midnight (clock-out earlier in the clock than clock-in), the calculator automatically adds 24 hours so the elapsed time is correct.

The formula

Paid hours = (Clock out − Clock in) − Unpaid break (add 24h when crossing midnight)

Subtract clock-in from clock-out to get elapsed time (adding 24 hours if the shift crosses midnight), then subtract any unpaid break time.

Worked example

09:00 to 17:30, with a 30-minute unpaid break

Elapsed time = 8.5 hours (510 minutes). Minus a 30-minute break = 8.0 hours (480 minutes) paid.

Frequently asked questions

Does this handle overnight shifts?

Yes — if clock-out is earlier in the clock than clock-in, the calculator treats it as an overnight shift and adds 24 hours automatically.

Should paid breaks be included in the unpaid break field?

No — only enter time that is unpaid. Paid breaks are already part of the paid elapsed time and don't need to be subtracted.

Does this handle timezone changes?

No — this is plain clock-time arithmetic for a single timezone. It does not account for daylight saving transitions or timezone travel during a shift.
