How to calculate percentages
How to calculate a percentage
To find what X% of a number is, divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the number. For example, 15% of 2,000 is 15 ÷ 100 × 2,000 = 300.
How to calculate percentage increase
To increase a value by a percentage, work out that percentage of the value and add it. For example, 2,000 increased by 15% is 2,000 + (15 ÷ 100 × 2,000) = 2,300.
How to calculate percentage decrease
To decrease a value by a percentage, work out that percentage of the value and subtract it. For example, 2,000 decreased by 15% is 2,000 − (15 ÷ 100 × 2,000) = 1,700.
How to calculate percentage change
To find the percentage change between two values, subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original value and multiply by 100. For example, from 100 to 125 is (125 − 100) ÷ 100 × 100 = 25%, an increase.
How to calculate a discount
To find a discounted price, work out the discount percentage of the price and subtract it. For example, 20% off 100 is 100 − (20 ÷ 100 × 100) = 80.
Worked examples
15% of 2,000
15 ÷ 100 × 2,000 = 300, so 15% of 2,000 is 300.
From 100 to 125
(125 − 100) ÷ 100 × 100 = 25%, which is a 25% increase.
20% off 100
100 − (100 × 20 ÷ 100) = 80, so the discounted price is 80.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a percentage of a number?
Divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the number. For example, 15% of 2,000 is 15 ÷ 100 × 2,000 = 300.
How do I work out what percentage one number is of another?
Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. For example, 300 of 2,000 is 300 ÷ 2,000 × 100 = 15%.
How do I calculate percentage increase or decrease?
Work out the change between the two values, divide by the original value and multiply by 100. A positive result is an increase and a negative result is a decrease. For example, from 100 to 125 is (125 − 100) ÷ 100 × 100 = 25% increase.
How do I calculate a discount price?
Work out the discount percentage of the original price and subtract it. For example, 20% off 100 is 100 − (100 × 20 ÷ 100) = 80.
