How the average works

The average (arithmetic mean) is the sum of a set of numbers divided by how many numbers there are. It is the most common way to summarise a group of values with a single number.

Add the values you want to average. The calculator sums them and divides by the count. You can add or remove values freely — the result updates live.

The mean is one of several measures of centre. Unlike the median (the middle value when sorted) or the mode (the most frequent value), the mean is sensitive to extreme values. For skewed data, the median can be more representative.

The formula

Average = Sum of values ÷ Number of values

Add every value together, then divide by how many values there are. For example, 10 + 20 + 30 = 60, and 60 ÷ 3 = 20.

Worked example

Three days of task output: 10, 20, 30

If a team completes 10, 20 and 30 tasks over three days, the average is (10 + 20 + 30) ÷ 3 = 20 tasks per day.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between mean and median?

The mean is the sum divided by the count. The median is the middle value when the numbers are sorted. The mean is pulled by extreme values; the median resists them.

Can the average be a decimal?

Yes. When the sum does not divide evenly by the count, the average is a decimal — for example, 10 and 11 average to 10.5.

What if I have negative or zero values?

They are valid in an average. Negative values lower the mean and zero values lower it too. Only completely empty input is rejected.
