How percentile rank works

Percentile rank tells you what share of a dataset falls below a given value — a way to interpret where one observation stands relative to everything else, common in test scores, benchmarks and performance comparisons.

Enter how many values fall below the one you're evaluating, and the total number of values in the dataset. The calculator returns the percentile rank.

This calculator uses the simple definition (values below ÷ total). A related, more conservative convention treats ties differently (a "mean rank" version) — the simple definition here is the more commonly taught approach.

The formula

Percentile rank = Values below ÷ Total values × 100

Divide the count of values below the one you're evaluating by the total number of values, then multiply by 100.

45 values fall below yours, out of 200 total

45 ÷ 200 × 100 = 22.5th percentile.

Frequently asked questions

What does the 90th percentile mean?

It means 90% of the values in the dataset fall below that point — it does not mean you scored 90% of the maximum possible value.

Are there different percentile-rank conventions?

Yes — this calculator uses the simple "values below ÷ total" definition. Some statistical software uses a slightly different interpolated convention that can give marginally different results for datasets with ties.

How do I count "values below" if there are ties?

Standard practice is to count strictly-below values only (not values equal to yours) — apply that consistently for comparable results across your dataset.
