How mean, median and mode work
The mean is the sum of the values divided by the count — the arithmetic average. The median is the middle value when the numbers are sorted. The mode is the most frequently occurring value.
These three measures describe the centre of a dataset in different ways. The mean is sensitive to extreme values, the median resists them, and the mode shows what is most common.
This calculator reports every mode when several values tie for most frequent, and reports that there is no mode when every value appears exactly once.
The formulas
Mean = Σx ÷ n · Median = middle value · Mode = most frequent value
The mean divides the sum by the count. The median is the middle value (or the average of the two middle values when n is even). The mode is the value (or values) with the highest frequency.
Worked example
Scores of 2, 4, 4, 6, 8
Mean = (2 + 4 + 4 + 6 + 8) ÷ 5 = 4.8. Median = 4 (the middle value when sorted). Mode = 4 (it appears twice). Count = 5, sum = 24.
Frequently asked questions
What if there are two modes?
The dataset is bimodal and the calculator reports both modes. When more than two values tie, all of them are reported.
Why is there sometimes no mode?
When every value occurs exactly once, no value is more frequent than any other, so the dataset has no mode.
Which measure should I use?
Use the mean for symmetric data without outliers, the median for skewed data or data with extremes, and the mode when you need the most common category or value.
