How first pass yield works
First pass yield (FPY) is the percentage of units that pass inspection or testing the first time, with no rework or repair — a stricter, more honest quality metric than final yield, which can hide how much rework happened along the way.
Enter the number of units that passed the first time and the total number processed. The calculator returns the FPY percentage.
Track FPY alongside your rework rate: a high final yield with a low FPY means a lot of hidden rework cost is being absorbed to get there.
The formula
FPY = Units passed first time ÷ Units processed × 100
Divide the number of units that passed on the first attempt by the total number of units processed, then multiply by 100.
Worked example
950 units passed first time out of 1,000 processed
950 ÷ 1,000 × 100 = 95% first pass yield.
Frequently asked questions
How is FPY different from final yield?
Final yield counts units that eventually pass, including after rework. FPY only counts units that passed on the very first attempt — a stricter view of underlying process quality.
What's a good FPY target?
It varies enormously by industry and process complexity — track your own trend over time rather than comparing to a single external benchmark.
Can I use this for a multi-step process?
This calculates FPY for one step or one combined pass/fail outcome. For a multi-step process, rolled throughput yield (multiplying each step's FPY together) is the standard extension.
