How productivity works
Productivity measures how much output is produced per unit of labor time — typically output per hour. It lets you compare performance across teams, periods or processes on a like-for-like basis.
Enter the amount of work completed (tasks, calls, documents, units — whatever fits) and the hours worked. The result is the average output per hour.
Productivity is context-dependent. A high number can hide quality problems, and raw counts ignore difficulty, so always consider output quality and task complexity alongside the rate.
The formula
Productivity = Work completed ÷ Hours worked
Divide the amount of work completed by the number of hours worked. The result is the output per hour, in whatever unit you entered (for example, tasks per hour).
Worked example
500 tasks completed in 40 hours
500 ÷ 40 = 12.5 tasks per hour.
Frequently asked questions
How is productivity different from utilization?
Utilization is the share of available time spent working. Productivity is the output produced per hour of work. You can have high utilization (busy) but low productivity (little output).
Why do I need to think about quality?
A rate counts quantity only. If rework is common or quality drops, a high productivity number does not mean better results. Track quality alongside output.
Can I compare productivity across teams?
Only when the work is comparable. Different tasks, difficulty, systems and definitions make direct comparisons misleading.
