FTE Calculator
Convert mixed full-time and part-time hours into a single staffing unit.
How FTE works
Full-time equivalent (FTE) converts a mix of full-time and part-time hours into a single comparable staffing unit, so headcount that includes part-timers can be compared and budgeted on the same basis as full-time roles.
Enter the total weekly hours worked across the group (sum every person's hours) and your organization's standard full-time weekly hours. The calculator returns the FTE count.
This is a general-purpose FTE definition. Some contexts — for example ACA compliance in the US — use their own statutory formula; check your specific regulatory requirement before using this result for a compliance filing.
The formula
FTE = Total weekly hours worked ÷ Standard full-time weekly hours
Sum every staff member's weekly hours, then divide by your organization's standard full-time week (commonly 40, sometimes 35 or 37.5).
Worked example
100 total weekly hours across a team, 40-hour standard week
100 ÷ 40 = 2.5 FTE — equivalent to two and a half full-time staff members.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as "standard" weekly hours?
Whatever your organization defines as a full-time week — commonly 40 hours in the US, sometimes 35 or 37.5 elsewhere. Use the same standard consistently across your FTE calculations.
Does 2.5 FTE mean 2.5 people?
Not necessarily — it could be 2 full-time staff plus one half-time staff member, or any combination that adds up to the same total hours. FTE measures capacity, not headcount.
Is this the same as the FTE definition used for ACA compliance?
No. US Affordable Care Act compliance uses its own statutory FTE formula with specific rules. This is a general capacity-planning calculation, not a compliance tool.
